Can you invoice in Austria without a trade licence (Gewerbe)?

Can there be an invoice without a trade licence?
Yes — a private invoice (or Honorarnote for fees) exists. But the line is not the paperwork; it is the nature of the activity.
When is it fine without a Gewerbe?
- Occasional, non-recurring income (a one-off sale, a one-time favour).
- A sustained, profit-oriented activity in Austria generally needs a Gewerbeanmeldung (or classification as a "new self-employed"/liberal profession). Regularity + profit intent = entrepreneurial activity.
Mandatory elements of a private invoice
The basics are still required: issuer name and address, the customer, date, a description of the service/product and the amount. As a private individual/Kleinunternehmer you do not charge VAT.
Tax: the income is still taxable
No Gewerbe does not mean tax-free. Your income may fall under income tax (Einkommensteuer) above the annual tax-free limit. For sustained activity SVS contributions may also apply.
Beware the "Liebhaberei" and non-registration trap
Working regularly for profit without registering can lead to fines. When in doubt ask the WKO or the tax office — a few minutes for clarity.
